On my initial appointment with Mr Chapman-Sheath I felt at last somebody was listening to me and understood the issues I was having with my knee, six weeks later after attending physio for a couple of appointments and given exercises to do at home I had a full knee replacement. The care I had from all the staff on the ward where I was recovering was excellent, nothing was too much trouble. I no longer have the intense pain I had prior to the operation, the rehabilitation exercises which are necessary do cause some pain and discomfort but that too is getting better every day. I have since had a six week check with Mr Chapman- Sheath and progressing well.
Professor Chapman-Sheath listened to me and my concerns NOT to rush in to surgical options but rather to investigate how long surgery could be delayed and what the alternative options available were.
After suggesting an up-to-date MRI scan of both knees he concluded that despite my knees being arthritic ("with bone on bone action") as I am currently not experiencing any pain or restrictions to what I want to achieve in my life, like regular daily walks and skiing 2-3 times a year, his recommendation to do nothing at this time but noted I would need a half-knee replacement some years down the line dependent on my weight and how the deterioration develops.
In my view this was a great outcome as I have no desire to have any surgical procedures unless they are absolutely necessary and needed. He showed me the scans and talked me through them and we explored the other options like steroid injections etc.
Professor Chapman-Sheath was without doubt fully invested in my concerns and problem I had with my knee. We discussed and explored a number of options before electing for a half knee replacement. The surgery went well, the team at The Spire Southampton were excellent, and the follow up care from Professor Chapman-Sheath and his team has been exemplary. It has turned my life around, both physically and mentally, and I am now re-enjoying an active life.
