I fractured my right neck of femur in March 2023 following a fall at home. As I was fit and active with no osteoarthritis of my hip a dynamic screw fixation was recommended and carried out the following day at Queen Alexandra Hospital. It was indicated that there could be a risk of this repair not working which was explained fully. For ten weeks post surgery I progressed well but did have always some residual pain. Unfortunately the pain increased and my function gradually reduced and I became dependent on two crutches again. Returning to the outpatients for an urgent X ray and review it was apparent that the fracture and failed to unite and the fixation was unstable. A total hip replacement was now required and I was referred to Mr Kane. Mr Kane assessed me one week later and was very thorough in his explanations and clinical reasoning for my hip replacement and the implications for my recovery and function as this would be a revision of the dynamic screws and therefore more complicated. He requested further X rays at that appointment and agreed that he would perform the surgery later that week. The results of the X rays showed further deterioration and Mr Kane explained that he would not have wanted to wait longer and risk further damage to the hip. The surgery was performed on 16th June 2023 under general anaesthetic and my post operative care was uneventful with only minimal pain that was well managed. My rehabilitation progressed quickly and I was discharged home on day 5. I have now had my post operative review with Mr Kane and discharged. I have been pain free since two weeks post surgery and my rehabilitation has been excellent. I am so grateful that the revision of the dynamic screws and the subsequent total hip replacement were dealt with so promptly, minimising further damage and facilitating a successful recovery and return to independence and mobility.
