In September 2021, I paid for a private consultation with Professor Amer after nine years of debilitating pain and endometriosis symptoms, and three failed laparoscopies with general gynaecologists in Nottingham. He looked at the images from a surgery I underwent in 2016 and identified clear signs of endometriosis in them, when previous surgeons had insisted there was nothing wrong with me. He was extremely reassuring and understanding, and made me feel completely validated. He stated that while the endometriosis was obvious to him due to his extensive training, it was likely missed by other surgeons due to presenting as mostly clear lesions and being hidden in adhesions. I was referred to his NHS service where I received around 15 months of excellent care while awaiting surgery. I finally had my surgery in May 2023, which showed that endometriosis had caused adhesions between my left ovary and bowel, my uterus and bladder, my right ovary and pelvic wall, and my right ureter and pelvic wall. In fact, I was diagnosed with stage 4 endometriosis (severe) and learned that I had come very close to losing my right kidney to the disease. Due to repeated severe and painful adhesions, I had taken the decision before the surgery to have my uterus, fallopian tube, and ovaries removed, alongside excision of endometriosis, because I was so terrified of waking up to learn that NOTHING had been done again. I am now surgically post-menopausal at 32 years old, but I am almost completely pain free - something I never thought possible. I still have some low-level symptoms, and I am struggling with other side effects of having been misdiagnosed for 12 years, but I am experiencing so much relief. It took 12 years of agony, fighting, repeated dismissal, repeated failed surgeries, and almost losing a kidney for me to finally get an endometriosis diagnosis. I cannot praise Prof. Amer highly enough and I will feel forever indebted to him for changing and saving my life.
