In late October 2019 I was shocked by an unexpected pancreatic cancer diagnosis by my local hospital. They referred me to Miss Kausar for consultation. Confused as to what to expect, my wife and I, when greeted by Miss Kausar were immediately struck by her personable warmth, and calm endearing confidence. Her understanding reassurances soon eased our initial apprehensions of our situation. She carefully explained to us the seriousness of my condition and the daunting outcome if no intervention was taken. She explained in comprehensive detail the Whipples procedure she needed to perform in order to remove my cancerous tumour and prolong my life. She concisely informed us of the complex procedure prospects and the necessary changes in my life that would be ongoing. Her straight talking but understanding demeanour was very much appreciated by myself and my wife. She answered all our questions with clarity, so when I knew ‘time was of the essence’, I quickly consented to the Whipples procedure. A few days later I was admitted for the operation. Miss Kausar came to see me the evening before to tell me what to expect the next day. In the evening after the procedure she telephoned my wife personally to let her know everything had gone well and I was recovering. While recovering she would visit me most days to ensure I was comfortable and progressing well. During this time something that did totally, pleasantly, surprise me was how much Miss Kausar seemed to be admired by the nursing staff! On several occasions they would say to me things such as, “how lovely Miss Kausar was to work for/with” or “Oh! You’re one of Miss Kausar’s we’ll look after you!” these words still echo with me. This probably also aided my recovery as 10 days later I was allowed to return home. A month later I saw Miss Kausar who was happy with my recovery. She also then requested I have 6 months chemotherapy to attempt to prevent a recurrence. I had no hesitancy at all in agreeing to this. The chemotherapy was gruelling but a scan and blood tests showed good results. Miss Kausar is now following up my progress with 6 monthly checks. It’s approaching 2 years now from my initial diagnosis but my wife and I always look forward to hearing from her (it’s telephone conversations only at present due to the pandemic). I have no delusions, test results may be good or not so good but I’m positive Miss Kausar will always suggest what’s best to try to keep me here! I have had, and I still am receiving ‘greatcare’ and wish to thank Miss Kausar and her amazing team, and all the wonderful staff at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital who look after me so well. I would also like to give special thanks to my cancer nurse Joanne Thomas who is always at the end of the telephone whenever I or my wife need assistance or advice. Thanks Joanne!
