I was a little shocked that a life changing diagnosis was made on the basis of a 20 minute initial consultation. Whilst I am sure that Dr Worth’s experience is such that this is reliable, from the patient perspective it somehow feels hasty. I’m not sure how this could be avoided but I would encourage other patients to always take someone with them for support from the outset. Dr Worth could perhaps prepare guidance for further reading and local support groups on specific conditions to soften the blow.

Response from Dr Paul Worth

Thank you very much for providing this feedback. It is of course very difficult to take on board a life-changing diagnosis. My new patient appointments are usually up to 45 minutes long and I purposely allow this length of time to be able to address as many issues resulting from a new diagnosis as I can. Therefore, I am surprised we only spent 20 minutes together if indeed this was the case. You are quite right to say that it’s a good idea to bring someone with you to an appointment, but of course it’s not always certain what will be diagnosed, self-evidently. I would of course be very keen to discuss any concerns you have further and give me the opportunity to support you. I imagine we are meeting again anyway having given you this diagnosis, but please do get in touch with my secretary if there is any doubt about this - I would be delighted to try to help.
